Saint Lucia Airport, officially known as Hewanorra International Airport (IATA: UVF), is the larger of Saint Lucia's two airports and is controlled by the Saint Lucia Air and Seaports Authority. The airport is near Vieux Fort Quarter in Saint Lucia, in the Caribbean.

It is located on the island's southwestern tip, fifty kilometers away from Castries, the nation's capital. It is the primary international air and cargo center for Saint Lucia, having connections to and from New York City, Miami, and London.

Saint Lucia Airport can accommodate a wide variety of long-range intercontinental jet aircraft, including Boeing 747s, Airbus A330s, Airbus A340s, and Boeing 777s. Castries is home to George F. L. Charles Airport, which is smaller than Saint Lucia Airport. It handles passenger flights throughout the Caribbean region by several regional turboprop aircraft and smaller prop aircraft.

The facility, formerly used as a military airstrip for the United States Army Air Forces, is now used for transporting passengers worldwide. In addition, it provides its passengers with a relaxing atmosphere that includes an open bar, free wireless internet access, snack bars, ATMs, and other facilities.

History of Saint Lucia Airport

West Indies Airways (BWIA) was the first airline to bring the Boeing 727-100 "Sunjet" service to the airport in 1965. The Boeing 727-100 "Sunjet" flew a once-weekly round trip route from Port of Spain, Trinidad to Barbados, St. Lucia to San Juan, Puerto Rico to Kingston, Jamaica to Montego Bay, and finally to Miami.

By 1971, BWIA used Boeing 707 planes to operate twice-weekly round-trip service between Port of Spain, St. Lucia, Antigua, and JFK Airport.

According to the Official Airline Guide (OAG), three airlines provided jet service at the airport between the years 1975 and 1979: British Airways, BWIA West Indies Airways (which was operating as BWIA International at this time), and Eastern Airlines, all of which flew Boeing 707 aircraft; and Eastern Airlines, which flew Boeing 727-100 aircraft.

These three airlines each operated jet service into the airport from several other islands in the Caribbean. In addition, British Airways operated nonstop flights that arrived at the airport straight from London Heathrow Airport.

In 1976, British Airways provided nonstop weekly Boeing 707 service from Barbados and Port of Spain, with these flights departing from London. In addition, Eastern provided continuous Boeing 727-100 service from Fort de France, Pointe a Pitre, and Port of Spain, as well as direct, no-change-of-plane 727 services from San Juan and St. Croix, with same-day connecting Eastern service being provided four days a week from Atlanta, Baltimore, Boston, and Chicago.

In 1976, BWIA International operated a nonstop Boeing 707 from Port of Spain weekly. Additionally, it operated weekly nonstop 707 flights from both Antigua and Barbados. It connected 707 flights from New York City twice a week, handled via either Antigua or Barbados. Additionally, it was operating weekly nonstop 707 flights from Port of Spain.

British Airways and BWIA International provided wide-body airliner service to the airport in 1993. British Airways flew Boeing 747-200 aircraft, and BWIA International flew Lockheed L-1011 Tristar series 500 aircraft.

According to the OAG, BWIA International operates nonstop service from Frankfurt, Germany, and London Heathrow Airport. They were also performing a direct, one-stop service from Zurich, Switzerland. At the same time, British Airways was operating a direct, one-stop service from London Gatwick Airport.

About Saint Lucia

Saint Lucia is a country comprising a group of islands in the West Indies. It is located in the eastern Caribbean Sea and shares a maritime border with the Atlantic Ocean. Iyonola was the name given to the island by the original Arawaks. Later on, Hewanorra was the name given to the island by the native Caribs. These two groups of Amerindians are considered to be distinct from one another.

A portion of the Windward Islands can be found to the north/northeast of the island of Saint Vincent, to the northwest of Barbados, and the south of Martinique. As of July 2021, it had a population of 184,400 people and covered a land area of 617 square kilometers.

Castries, the present capital of St. Lucia, is also the island's largest city. Soufrière, the island's second-largest city, is the first French colonial capital of the isle. The French were the first to establish a permanent settlement on the island.

In 1660, they agreed to a peace deal with the indigenous Carib people of the island. Between 1663 and 1667, England was in control of the island. In the years that followed, it engaged in 14 wars with France and went through several different rulers.

The year 1814 marks the year the British gained possession of the island. Saint Lucia was referred to as the "Helen of the West" because of the frequency with which it changed hands between British and French authorities.

This nickname was derived from the Greek legendary character Helen of Troy. In the year 1840, a representative government was established.

The year 1953 marks the beginning of universal suffrage. The island became part of the West Indies Federation in 1958 and remained a member until 1962. Saint Lucia attained its independence on February 22, 1979, and was accepted into the Commonwealth of Nations as a Commonwealth realm the same day.

Saint Lucia is a mixed jurisdiction, meaning its legal system is based on civil and English common law. The Civil Code of St. Lucia, enacted in 1867, was derived from the Civil Code of Quebec, passed in 1866, and included English common law-style legislation. Additionally, it is a member of the International Organization of the Francophonie (OIF).
